Cary Black
Cary Black (acoustic bass, vocals) has been playing and singing with the Kathy Kallick Band since 2012. His inventive and melodic bass lines never get in the way of his perfect timekeeping, and he’s pushing the band to new levels of creativity and drive. Described by Alan Senauke in Sing Out! magazine as “a musician’s musician,” Cary finds himself at home in a variety of musical settings.
In addition to those he played with on many recordings (listed below), Cary has performed with Howard Alden, Laurindo Almeida, Ernestine Anderson, Greg Brown, Petula Clark, Nokie Edwards (The Ventures), Mary Gauthier, David Grier, Dan Hicks, Barbara Higbie, Rob Ickes, The Harry James Orchestra, Rebecca Kilgore, Keith Little, Laura Love, Rose Maddox, Mike Marshall, Carol McComb, Alan Munde, Mark Murphy, Mark O’Connor, Joe Pass, U. Utah Phillips, Vicki Randle, Johnnie Ray, Del Rey, Raul Reynoso, Riders in the Sky, Peter Rowan, Charles Sawtelle, Jennifer Scott, Paul Siebel, Kay Starr, Noel Paul Stookey, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Ernie Watts, Pete Wernick, The Western Flyers, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, Chris Williamson, and Glen Yarbrough. He was a member of Laurie Lewis & Grant Street for three years, playing and singing bass on the 1994 IBMA song of the year, “Who Will Watch the Home Place,” and toured with Laurie and Kathy in support of their Sing the Songs of Vern & Ray album. Cary was an adjunct faculty member in Music Theory, Ear Training, and Improvisation at The Evergreen State College from 1994 to 2000, and has taught at many music camps, including the California Bluegrass Association Music Camp, Colorado Roots Music Camp, California Coast Music Camp, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop (Washington), Bluegrass at the Beach (Oregon), B.C. Bluegrass Workshop (Canada), Greater Yellowstone Music Camp (Wyoming), Centrum Swing Workshop (Washington), Wintergrass Academy (Washington), and Walker Creek Music Camp (California) |
